It is Diwali, or also called Divali, Deepavali or Tihar. It is one of the most important festivals in Hinduism and is celebrated big in Nepal. It is also called the festival of light, because everywhere you find candles and lamps when it is getting dark.
You will find oil lamps everywhere. Dipa, a traditional clay bowl is filled with ghee (butter) and a cotton wick. People put these before their houses, on their windows and in the street.
Diwali is a festival for everyone and it mainly celebrates the victory of the good. During Diwali several gods are worshipped, one of them is Lakshmi, the goddess of beauty and wealth. You will find little children on the street singing to people for money and candy. It feels a bit like a mix between Christmas, Sint-Maarten (Dutch) and Halloween. We went to celebrate Diwali in Bhaktapur and Kathmandu. You can see the pictures of this beautiful, cosy and happy festival below.
Happy Diwali everyone!
Best Wishes for ur Dream Travel.
