A stopover in Hong Kong is a great way to break up the long flight from Europe to Australia! Coming from the Netherlands you won’t need a visum, unlike when visiting China. So easy for a quick or last-minute visit.
Besides the feeling of being in a mega city with an impressive skyline, it is also easy going. Enough places to relax, beautiful temples to visit, many many shops and the beach is just one ferry ride away! Plenty of hostels and hotels for every budget. Hong Kong has a very good metro system, so as long as your close to a metro station you will be fine! There are also lots of hip and cool places to eat. Save yourself money though by eating local. Look for busy dining shops, often with very bright lights, full with locals and your probably find good food for a fair price. We did visit the Peak and we know… it is very touristy, but the view is amazing. You can take a tram up and down, but if you are fit you can also take a (steep) walk.
Want to leave the busy city centre behind? Take a ferry to one of the other island and you find yourself in a completely different world within one hour. Beautiful beaches and lots of hikes!
Tip: Get an octopus card when arriving on the airport. This is a local transport card which you can use to take the train, metro, tram to the peak and in many shops. When you leave, go to a train desk on the airport and they give you back the remaining money.
Hong Kong was a positive surprise and worth the visit! A photogenic city as well, so bring your camera and check out our pictures below to get the vibe of this buzzling and interesting city.
